<p>GeckoCon 2024 by Coingecko, in Bangkok, Thailand, brought together industry experts to discuss vital topics in the Web3 gaming space. During the panel on 11 November, leaders from Sky Mavis, Chromia, Aethir, and Soneium shared their views on blockchains. They discussed how these blockchains, for web3 gaming or not, offer the best conditions for developers.</p><p>During 2024, various projects migrated to W<a href="https://funjible.games/news/ronin-forge-ushers-in-the-great-gaming-migration">eb3 gaming blockchains via programs like Ronin Forge</a>. Gaming-specific chains are built to support the unique demands of Web3 games. Juntaro Iwase, Senior Growth Manager at Sky Mavis, argued that effective distribution is the biggest hurdle for Web3 games.</p><p>According to Iwase, Web3 gaming chains can solve distribution problems by leveraging their existing communities, infrastructure, and technical capabilities. Kartik Jain, Head of Ecosystem at Aethir, added that gaming chains allow developers to focus on creating engaging gameplay and avoid the extra hassle of managing a general blockchain.</p><h2>Benefits of General Purpose Blockchains for Gaming</h2><p><br>On the other side of the debate, Johnson Lai, Head of Data and AI at <a href="https://funjible.games/games?search=&amp;sortBy=6&amp;blockchain=Chromia">Chromia,</a> highlighted the flexibility of general-purpose blockchains. He highlighted key features of Chromia, like allowing games to have their own mini-chain. The panel agreed that there was still value in general-purpose chains. This is because they could deliver better results when it comes to scalability and data management. So, having a “one size fits all” answer for each project is rather challenging.</p><p>Mingshi S., Head of DeFi at Soneium, said that general-purpose chains benefit from broad industry partnerships. Soneium, for example, aims to leverage Sony’s existing network, including PlayStation and other ventures.</p><p>Toward the end of the discussion, custom-built chains became the focus of attention. However, the panelists highlighted their high costs and technical demands. Iwase said Sky Mavis made Ronin because Ethereum's issues slowed down <a href="https://funjible.games/games?search=axie+infinity&amp;sortBy=6">Axie Infinity</a>. Lai added that custom chains can lead to trapped funds and user frustration because they lack enough security and infrastructure.</p><h2>The Hybrid Approach</h2><p>Nowadays, the majority of Web3 gaming projects follow a hybrid approach. This means blockchain is used only for essentials, with most processes done off-chain. This shows why Web3 gaming blockchains are a good choice: Native solutions often work best for specific needs.</p><p>Overall, the panelists agreed that choosing a blockchain for a Web3 game depends on the game’s goals and audience.
