<p>NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 announcement turned into a full-blown controversy over the last week. Capcom has now clarified that no AI-generated assets will appear in its shipped titles. The publisher’s developers reportedly had no idea they were involved in NVIDIA’s program until the&nbsp;<a href="https://funjible.games/news/dlss-5-coming-to-starfield-resident-evil-this-fall">public announcement</a>.</p><p>“<a href="https://mynintendonews.com/2026/03/23/capcom-we-will-not-be-implementing-materials-generated-by-ai-into-our-games/">We will not be implementing materials generated by AI into our game content,” Capcom said</a> on March 23. One Ubisoft developer confirmed it directly: "We found out at the same time as everyone else."</p><p>For Capcom specifically, the surprise was greater, as the studio has long been known to resist AI integration.</p><p>Part of the DLSS 5 controversy stems from a technical dispute that NVIDIA has not cleanly resolved. CEO Jensen Huang pushed back on critics the day after the reveal, saying those calling DLSS 5 an AI filter are "completely wrong." His argument was that the technology is deeply integrated at the developer level.</p><p>That claim ran into a wall quickly.&nbsp;<a href="https://hothardware.com/news/nvidia-dlss-5-uses-2d-data-to-boost-image-quality-what-we-know">HotHardware reported that NVIDIA DLSS 5 uses 2D data to boost image quality</a>. The internal slides NVIDIA shared also indicated that DLSS 5 uses the same data inputs as previous DLSS versions.</p><p>Based on our understanding, DLSS 5 is a frame-level AI process. Developers can mask specific objects to exclude them, but the base operation is an AI pass over every rendered frame. Previous DLSS versions improved resolution and frame rate without touching the underlying art. That may still be true in practice. But the fact that some of those same developers didn't even know they were involved in the program makes those reassurances harder to take at face value.</p><p>Developers and publishers named in NVIDIA’s announcement quickly drew criticism from players who don’t want generative AI in games. At the same time, the industry is clearly moving toward AI-assisted development in some form. Tools like&nbsp;<a href="https://funjible.games/news/razer-qa-companion-ai-automates-game-testing">Razer’s QA companion AI</a>, which automates visual testing tasks, show that this shift is already underway.</p><div class="raw-html-embed">
