Dying in Valheim costs more than a walk back to your tombstone. Every death also takes a cut of your skills. At high levels, that cut can wipe out hours of training. Most players know skill drain exists. Fewer know the exact numbers, or that the death penalty slider changes them.

This guide covers how much skill drain you take on death and how the No Skill Drain buff works. It also compares every death penalty setting and shows you how to change yours. The numbers come from the Valheim Wiki, which was updated after the 1.0 launch.

How much skill drain do you get in Valheim?

On the default death penalty, Valheim skill drain takes 5% of your level in every skill each time you die. The Valheim Wiki’s Death page confirms this figure for Normal worlds. The loss scales with your level. A skill at 20 drops one level. A skill at 100 drops five.

You also lose your progress toward the next level. Say your Run skill is 70 and you’re halfway to 71. Dying on Normal sets you to 66.5 with zero progress toward the next level. The game shows this as 66.

Higher levels cost more XP, so the wiki estimates each death costs about one eighth of the total XP you’ve put into a skill. Put another way, eight hours of grinding a skill loses roughly one hour on death.

The No Skill Drain buff after death

Valheim gives you a No Skill Drain buff each time you respawn. It lasts 10 minutes. While it’s active, further deaths don’t cost you any skill levels.

This matters most during a bad corpse run. You can die three times trying to reach your tombstone and still only pay the penalty once. Keep an eye on the timer, though. A death after it runs out drains your skills again.

Valheim death penalty settings compared

The death penalty is one of Valheim’s world modifiers. It controls skill loss and what happens to your gear. Here are the values from the Valheim Wiki’s World Modifiers page:

Setting

Skill loss

Equipped gear

Rest of inventory

Casual

1%

Kept

Dropped

Very Easy

1%

Dropped

Dropped

Easy

2.5%

Dropped

Dropped

Normal

5%

Dropped

Dropped

Hard

7.5%

Dropped

Destroyed

Hardcore

100%

Destroyed

Destroyed

Casual is the best pick for most relaxed players. It has the lowest skill loss and lets you keep the gear you’re wearing. Hardcore is a true perma-death run. You lose every skill and every item you carry.

Can you turn off skill drain completely?

No death penalty preset turns Valheim skill drain off completely. Casual and Very Easy are the lowest at 1%. That’s small, but it isn’t zero.

Admins can go further with global keys. The SkillReductionRate key is the multiplier for skill loss on death. Its default is 100, and lower values shrink the penalty. You set it with the console command setkey SkillReductionRate [value], which needs devcommands enabled.

How to change the death penalty in Valheim

You can change the death penalty in three places.

In the menu: Select your world on the Join World screen and open World Modifiers. Move the Death Penalty slider or pick a preset like Casual.

On a dedicated server: Add the modifier to the server’s launch arguments, such as -modifier deathpenalty casual.

In the console: With devcommands on, use setworldmodifier deathpenalty casual.

One quirk to know: the console can’t set a modifier back to Normal directly. The only fix is setworldpreset default, which resets every modifier on the world at once.

FAQ

Does Casual remove skill loss in Valheim?

No, Casual does not remove skill loss in Valheim. It cuts the penalty from 5% to 1% per skill and lets you keep your equipped gear.

Do you lose skill progress on death in Valheim?

Yes, you lose your progress toward the next skill level on every death in Valheim. This happens on all death penalty settings, even Casual.

Can you change the death penalty on an existing Valheim world?

Yes, you can change the death penalty on an existing Valheim world. Open World Modifiers from the Join World screen, or use the console with devcommands. Your lost skills don’t come back, but future deaths use the new setting.

Does the No Skill Drain buff reset when you die again?

The No Skill Drain buff in Valheim protects you from further skill loss for 10 minutes after a death. If you die again inside that window, you lose nothing extra.
