Valheim limits how many players can share a world, and many groups only learn this when they try to play together. The 1.0 launch on September 9, 2026 also added PS5 and Switch 2 players, which brought new questions about group size and joining friends.

This guide covers the official player limit, how Valheim multiplayer works, and the simple ways to start a world together.

How Many People Can Play Valheim?

Up to 10 people can play Valheim together in one world at the same time. Iron Gate states that servers are capped at 10 players. The Valheim 1.0 FAQ confirms the limit did not change with the full release.

The cap counts players who are online at once. A group of 12 can share one world, but only 10 can be inside it together. The limit is the same for worlds hosted in game and for dedicated servers.

Solo play works too. Iron Gate supports Valheim as both a singleplayer and a co-op game.

Is Valheim Multiplayer?

Yes, Valheim is a multiplayer co-op game for 1 to 10 players. Iron Gate calls it a co-op game for a few friends, not an MMO. Everyone works together against the world, and enemies scale in difficulty with the size of your group.

PvP is optional. Players who want to fight each other turn on friendly fire from the inventory screen.

Iron Gate runs no official servers. Every world is hosted by a player or on a dedicated server.

How to Play Valheim With Friends

The easiest way to play Valheim with friends is to host a world from inside the game. One player starts a session from their own world, and it can be public or private. The world stays online only while the host is playing.

A dedicated server suits groups that want the world online all the time. Iron Gate offers a free Valheim Dedicated Server app on Steam for this.

How to Join a Friend in Valheim

Joining by code is the simplest way into a friend’s world, and it works on every platform. Iron Gate’s crossplay FAQ lists the steps:

The host opens the pause menu inside the world.

The host clicks the join code to copy it, then sends it to friends.

Each friend opens Join Game and presses Add server.

They paste the code and connect.

This works for worlds started in game and for dedicated servers. Valheim supports crossplay between all platforms, so PC, Xbox, PS5 and Switch 2 players can share a world. Our Valheim crossplay guide covers the details.

Valheim Multiplayer FAQ

Can more than 10 people play Valheim?

No, more than 10 people can’t play Valheim in one world at the same time. The cap is official and applies to every server. Bigger groups can take turns in one world or split across two.

Does Valheim have voice chat?

No, Valheim does not have built-in voice chat. The game only has text chat, so Iron Gate suggests Discord or TeamSpeak for voice.

Can Xbox players host a Valheim dedicated server?

No, Xbox players can’t run a Valheim dedicated server on the console. They can still join one, as long as crossplay is on for both the Xbox and the server. Parental control settings can hide the crossplay option.

Does Valheim progress carry over between platforms?

Valheim progress only carries over between Xbox and PC, and only when the PC copy runs through the Microsoft Store. Every other platform keeps its own saves.
